The Busbey Natatorium

For over twenty
years, Cleveland State’s Natatorium has earned its place among the elite
swimming facilities in the United States and has enjoyed a rich history of
championships and outstanding swimmers. A new chapter in that history was
written in the fall of 1999 when the facility was officially dedicated as the
Robert F. Busbey Natatorium after CSU’s long-time swimming coach and athletic
director, Bob Busbey. Mr. Busbey was an
Assistant U.S. Olympic Coach at the 1964 Tokyo Games and his Cleveland Swim
Club won the 1961 U.S. National Swimming Championship.
When it opened in
1973, then called the CSU Natatorium, it was considered special simply because
it was one of only two indoor university pools in the state of Ohio that was 50
meters in length. However, there were other aspects of the pool that made it
unusual. The one feature that
immediately stood out was that the pool’s large gutters made it extremely fast
compared to those of other schools.
Since opening, the
Busbey Natatorium has hosted four NCAA Division I Championships, eleven Eastern
Intercollegiate Championships, seventeen Penn-Ohio Conference Championships,
twenty National Aquatic Championship Events including the National Water Polo
Championships, international diving meets, AAU and YMCA National Championships,
Masters Nationals, the International Children’s Games of 2004, USA Swimming
Junior National and Sectional Meets and even the World Swimming Games for the
Deaf. It is the only 25-yard pool where
an American/US Open Record was set in every swimming event in one single meet.
This was during the 1977 NCAA Division I Championship Meet and has never been
done since. That is where the Busbey Natatorium got the label “the fastest
short course pool in the world”.
Cleveland State University has had a swimming team since 1938 under the
former name of the school, Fenn College. It is one of the oldest continuous
running collegiate programs in the Midwest.
The Busbey
Natatorium is an indoor 9 lane, 50-meter by 25-yard wide pool (including 23 seven-foot
wide competitive lanes) with lanes measuring 12 to 16.5 feet deep. The
Natatorium has an elevated 1500 seat spectator area running the entire length
of the competition course and on one end. It is accessible by participants via
stairs and elevator. A separate 25-yard, six-lane instructional pool is located
in an adjacent area. Locker room and shower access is immediately off the pool
deck. It is not recommended that personal articles be left in the lockers.
Handicap seating, elevator and public restrooms are available for spectators
upstairs. New blocks have been installed. An automatic touch pad timing system
will be in place.
SHAVING DOWN ON SITE PROHIBITED. Concessions
will be available at the CSU athlete-operated stand on the main concourse.
Handicap
access is available in the lower front entrance and behind the Natatorium at
the rear loading dock. Spectator, participant, coach, official and bus or van
parking is available across the street from the Natatorium. Spectators should
enter through the upstairs main entrance.
