THE DOLPHIN
This newsletter is dedicated to those that have
come to realize that swimming is a way of life.
The month
of February signals the importance of proper preparation for the championship
part of the indoor season. The swimmers,
at this point, should be in good physical condition, have the correct technique
in their strokes, and understand what good turns are and practice them in
practice. It is very important when
getting ready for the final meets that the swimmer attends every practice
possible. When in the water, the swimmer
should pay particular attention to the coach’s instructions. It is critical
that the swimmer follow these directions exactly. It is time to practice perfect! Focus shall be on swimming fast! The swimmer should be swimming faster now
than any other time of the season. The
swimmers should also have an idea on goals that they wish to accomplish during
the final meets of the season.
Understand and be aware of practice times in kicking, pulling, and
swimming and how they relate to meet times.
The remainder of the season is
listed below. It is a busy time for the
Dolphins. Many meets listed below have
time standards that need to be met in order to enter the meet. Read meet entry instructions carefully. When in doubt, ask your coach for advice.

LESD Booster
Fee –PAST DUE
All families must have, by
December 15th, contributed at least $150.00 of the $200.00 total due for their
Booster fees. Currently some families are having their meet entries suspended
because these payments have not been received. Those entry fees will not
be refunded. The total family fee of $200.00 must be paid in full no later than
February 15th in order for swimmers to be entered in the Champs meets or to be
included in team practices once high school season is over. Ads and event
sponsorships for the USA Sectional meet can still be sold to help off-set these
fees. Email Claudia Bacon (Ohiobacons@alltel.net)

Wrap-Ups
2005 Quad Meet
Nineteen Lake Erie Silver Dolphins
were selected to be part of the 2005 Ohio Quad Team competing in Indianapolis,
Indiana: Alana Arnold, Elizabeth Aronoff, Brooke Bieganski, Maryn Bieganski,
Lauren Choban, Emily Gaudiani, Mike Gaudiani, Jordan Hawn, Annie Holy, Stacey
Miozzi, Meggie Pernsteiner, Kelsey Pinkerton, Micah Simpson, Dana Shaker, Megan
Splain, Kevin Stang, Meghan Stang, Courtney Tumbush and Mel Vasquez.
Kevin
Stang (10) swept all four of his events at Quads! KJ took first in
100 free, 200 free, 200IM and the 100 back. His 100 back time of 1:06.69 was a
new team record! Also earning first place finishes are Micah Simpson (10) 100
FLY and Emily Gaudiani (9) 200IM.
The Lake Erie and Ohio LSC’s combined
to form the 2005 Ohio Quad team for competition with the best swimmers from
Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Silver Dolphin swimmers made an
excellent contribution to this team in virtually all age groups. Both
Kelsey Pinkerton and Emily Gaudiani scored in the 10 and under age group, with
Kelsey placing 7th in the 200 IM (2:39.60) and Emily placing 1st
in the IM (2:32.45). Four 11-12 girls finished in the top eight: Lauren
Choban placed 8th in the 100 back (1:07.24); Maryn Bieganski placed
8th in the 50 fly (29.20) and 5th in the 100 fly (1:03.36);
Annie Holy (swimming in the Open age group) placed 7th in the 200
fly (2:22.33); and Alana Arnold placed 8th in the 200 IM (2:21.50),
7th in the 100 fly (1:04.04), and 2nd in the 50 fly
(28.17). Three 13-14 girls scored in the Open age group: Stacy Miozzi
placed 8th in the 200 IM (2:20.34); Jordan Hawn placed 8th
in the 200 breast (2:38.29) and 7th in the 100 breast (1:14.81); and
Meghan Stang placed 6th in the 500 (5:27.22).
On the male side, Micah Simpson
placed 7th in the 10 and under 100 breast (1:26.78), 6th
in the 50 breast (39.16) and 1st in the 50 free (28.27); Mike Gaudiani
placed 5th in the 11-12 200 IM (2:18.31), 8th in the Open
200 breast (2:43.60), and 7th
in the 200 fly (2:22.10); and KJ Stang – perhaps the star of the meet – placed
1st in all four of his 10 and under events: 100 free (1:00.04), 200
free (2:09.35), 100 back (1:06.69– a new LESD record and narrowly missing the
Lake Erie record), and the 200 IM (2:22.79–a Meet Record!). Way to go Dolphins!

USA
SECTIONAL MEET, MARCH 17-20, 2005
As you are aware, the LESD hosted
USA Sectional Meet is scheduled for March 17-20, 2005 at Cleveland State
University. Teams from all over the country can come and compete. All Silver Dolphin parents, regardless of
the age of your child, will be asked to time at least one session and
contribute one hospitality item. Since we will not be hosting the Busbey
Meet in June this year, you will not be asked to work at an LESD meet again
until November of 2005! If you are fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to have a
swimmer with a sectional cut in this meet, be prepared to camp out at CSU for
all sessions of this meet. We will staff all positions other than timers with
your wonderful expertise.
The
sessions run as follows. Note, that depending on your position, you will need
to show up earlier than the start time.
Warm-up Prelims Finals

March
18-19, Fri-Sat 7:30-8:45am 9:00am

March
20, Sunday 7:30-8:45am 9:00am
3:00-4:15pm

We will also need your younger
children to serve as “Basket Kids”, which are coveted positions and lots of
fun! (ask your coaches about this) Dana Trau (wdam@adelphia.net) is working with
swim group contacts to staff timers/basket kids (8-12 years; finals only) for
this meet. You can email Dana and give her your first and second choices for
timing slots on a first come, first serve basis. If you do not request a slot,
you will be assigned as positions fill up.
If you are out of town or for some other reason feel you cannot work,
please send Dana the name and phone number of your replacement. This meet was
announced in September, so we have had lots of time to prepare and make
schedule adjustments. As in years past, we will have a special meet worker
t-shirt to wear. We sell it at cost to
our team—it should not run more than $5.00 each. Details will be coming in the
March Newsletter or published on the website (www.lesd.org).
Hospitality donation requests
will be emailed/hand delivered to each of you along with the name of the person
collecting them and the date that they need to be received by. These may be as
simple as a dozen bottles of water or a couple jars of salad dressing, but
nothing expensive. We’ll give you time to shop for sales. Donna English and Mimi Hable are spearheading the hospitality
committee. If anyone would like to join this lively
crew, email Donna (PMS4EVR05@aol.com)! We
will be serving 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 4 dinners to almost 120 people so
much help will be needed. Cooking is optional, but cutting and dicing abilities
are required! This is the last hoorah for this crew, so fun is in store!
I am in the process of trying
to get CSU to offer our volunteers a discounted parking pass. I will let you
know via the website on how to order your own. I thank you in advance for
helping out, as Dolphin parents always do, and ask that you bear with us in this
rather large undertaking. USA Swimming
will have a representative in attendance so we will be sure to put our best
foot forward.
