THE DOLPHIN

November 2004

This newsletter is dedicated to those that have come to realize that swimming is a way of life.

Plain Talk

We have enjoyed a successful start to the short course season.  Many swimmers went to the Season Opener.  Many best times were earned at this particular meet.  The skill level was quite good.  The Canton and Solon Developmental meets continued the fine progress that the swimmers are making both in speed and technique. The Mile and Pentathlon meets scheduled for the end of October will be covered in the December newsletter.

November may prove to be a hectic month.  The Hudson Odd-Age Meet will take place November 6-7 at the Ocasek Natatorium (University of Akron). The USC Meet will take place November 14 at Orange High School.  We conclude the month with our own Mark Braun Invitational at Cleveland State University, November 19-21.  All of the above meet entries have been sent in.

In December, we will participate in the United States Open on the 2-4 at San Antonio, Texas; the Shaker Invitational Meet at Cleveland State on the 3-5, entry due of 10/31; the Brunswick Developmental Meet December 12, entry due 11/8; the Candy Cane Classic Meet December 19, entry due 11/17 and the Pittsburgh Christmas Meet will be held at Pitt, December 17-19 (entry sent in).

High School

The high school season begins in the month of November.  Beginning Monday, November 8th, the 3:30-5:15PM practice at the Upper School will be for Hawken swimmers only.  Other swimmers that train with Jerry will swim from 5:15-7:00 PM.  The 5:45-7:30 AM practice is an LESD practice, open to all high school swimmers, and others invited by Jerry.  High school swimmers that do not practice regularly with Jerry will be billed $25/month.

Stroke Clinic - Saturday, November 27, 2004 at Hawken Upper School

The Lake Erie Silver Dolphins are sponsoring a stroke clinic featuring Jack Bauerle and Jerry Champer, head coach and assistant swim coach, respectively, for the University of Georgia Bulldogs.  Georgia is a perennial NCAA power and is especially strong in the individual medley and sprint events.  Coach Bauerle is one of the most respected coaches in collegiate swimming.   A former NCAA coach of the year, Coach Bauerle was the coach of the 2004 Olympic sprinter Kara Lynn Joyce and has served many times as a coach for USA Swimming in international competitions.  Coach Bauerle will offer a coaches’ clinic from 8:00-9:30 AM covering Georgia’s sprint and IM programs.  Coach Champer will offer two pool sessions for swimmers.  The first, from 10:00-12:00, will cover Georgia stroke, turn, and start drills and training progressions for the individual medley; the second, from 2:00-4:00 PM, will cover Georgia sprint, start and turn drills and training progressions.  Space is limited and application should be made early.  The cost is $20 per session for coaches and swimmers.  Checks should be made payable to the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins and application mailed to:  Jerry Holtrey, 3522 Glencairn Rd. Shaker Hts., OH 44122.  If you have further questions, call Jerry Holtrey (216-921-1805) or Rick Stacy (440-951-8241).

Swim-A-Thon

Thank you to all the participating families and volunteers who made 2nd Annual Swim-a-Thon a huge success.   We had 56 swimmers participate from the white, red, blue and bronze groups and collected almost $7,200 to be applied toward family booster fees.   Our top collectors were: Erica Dorfman (gold group) with $550, the Forsythe family (Taylor and Abby) with $400, Jubilee Winar with $372 and the Cerer family (Gabriella, Joey and Michael) with $300.

Any swimmers from the silver, gold and high school groups, who participated in the Swim-a-thon during regular practice, please turn in your Swim-a-Thon envelopes ASAP.  There is a Swim-a-Thon folder in the file box at the Upper School pool (where the swim meet entry folders are located).

Thanks to Pauline and Brian Dorenkott, Nancy Choban, Dana Trau, Nora Holy, Josey Cerer, Teri Glassman, Heidi and Dave Csumitta, and Margie Moragne for working the entire three hours of the Swim-a-Thon.  Thanks also to all the silver and gold swimmers who counted laps for the younger kids, and to our lifeguards JEN NEMETH and ANNE PETRAIUOLO, both of who refused both monetary payment and service hours for their work!  An honorable mention to our DJs, Ryan Holy and Ilya Byzov for their emceeing talents.  Prizes were donated by Margie Moragne Bakery items were donated by the following families:  Trau, Cerer, Giordano, Glassman, Arnold, Zinda, Fox, Choban, Forsythe, Holland, Moragne, Holy, Schlang, and Jobson.  My apologies to anyone who contributed and I failed to mention.

Many thanks also to Diana Munz, a true champion and role model, who graciously signed autographs and posed for pictures with all the kids (and even some adults!).   How exciting to see an Olympic medal in person!  And, finally many thanks to our coaches who participated in the coaches' raffle; taking a plunge in support of the Swim-a-Thon were Jerry (dunked by 4-year-old Michael Cerer), Rick (who selflessly left home during the nationally televised Wisconsin football game!), Paul (generously giving up time on his lesson schedule), and Betsy (the crowd favorite).  Thanks also to coach Cheryl for agreeing to be dunked during practice this past week (she was out of town for the Swim-a-Thon).  Remember, if you haven't turned in your sponsor envelopes, do so as soon as possible.  Thanks again!

Candy Fundraiser orders needed by November 5th

Helen Grace Chocolate Bar ($1.00 chocolate bars), CVAC swimmers can give orders to Rick Balcam.  Payment in full is required with the order although the checks will not be deposited until the candy is delivered at the Mark Braun meet.  Envelopes are available at both Hawken School pools.  One half of the candy sales will be credited to your booster account.  Checks are made payable to the LESD Booster Club.  If you need additional information, please call Claudia Bacon at 440-338-6133.

Special Request

Jerry Holtrey is looking to buy a second hand pool table with slate top (preferable solid light wood) in good condition for a very reasonable price!!!

Meet Results Wrap-Ups

Season Opener-Strongsville, October 9-10

There were many fine swims at the Strongsville meet and the coaches were pleased at the small number of DQ’s that LESD had. Not a single relay was disqualified, and not a single swimmer missed one of his/her events! Congratulations to the LESD 10&Under Boys who, on Sunday, took first, second, and third places in the 200 Medley Relays! A sweep! Well done, swimmers!

Individual event winners included Amanda Trau (50 fly), Kathryn Bullen (100 IM), Carmella Boggess (50 & 100 breast, 100 IM), Megan Spain (50 free, 100 breast), Brittany Strumbel (200 free, 100 back), Emily Splain (50 back, 50 fly), Henry Senkfor (50 free, 50 fly), Joey Cerer (100 free, 50 back, 50 breast, 100 IM), Alex Stotter (25 fly), Nicholas Crane (100 free, 50 back, 100 IM), David Aronoff (100 IM), and Melvin Vazquez (100 breast).

In addition, finishing in the top eight and thus earning awards were Sarah Senkfor, Mara Ursu, Morgan Trau, Michael Cerer, Gabrielle Farren, Nellie Bornhorst, Katie Opacich, Gabriella Cerer, Eleanor Rimmerman, Nathan Zinda, Ryan Gleske, Justin Ciferno, Nils Gudbranson, Robert Ranallo, Maria Kolesar, Rachel Shimrock, Ashley Zinda, Elizabeth Aronoff, Rachel Ciferno, Taylor Forsythe, Sarah Koucheki, Michael Braun III, Nikolai Levinsohn, Ted Bornhorst, James Martin, Liam Oznowich, Jagger Bruck, Nick Ranallo, Brian Csumitta, Amanda Thurman, Nicole Santantonio, Jacqueline Trudeau, Megan Stang, and Sarah Bennish. Canton, October 16 - 17

Many Silver Dolphins kicked off their season at the Canton City Schools Invitational, October 16 & 17.  Leading the way with victories for the 10 & under girls were Kelsey Pinkerton (50 Back), Emily Gaudiani (200 Free, 100 Back, and 200 IM), and Stephanie Nemeth (50 Fly, 100 Fly, 50 Breast).  Pinkerton, Gaudiani, and Nemeth also teamed with Brooke Bieganski to capture wins in the 200 Medley and 200 free relays.

The highlight of the meet for the 10 & under boys actually came in the Open events.  Nicholas Crane, competing in his last meet and a 10 & under, swam up a storm.  Nicholas established new LESI Swimmer & Event Records in the 200 Free (2:04.67), 500 Free (5:28.55), and 400 IM (4:58.05).  His time in the 100 Free (58.39) is also a new LESI Swimmer Record.  All of these events are obviously new LESD Records as well.  Way to go Nicholas!

The Silver Dolphins also had first place finishes from Maryn Bieganski (12) in the 50 Fly; Courtney Tumbush (13) in the 200 Free; and Jordan Hawn (13) in the 200 Breast.  Other swimmers turning in top 8 finishes were Brooke Bieganski, Sarah Holmes, Ashley Zinda, Caroline Vexler, Rachel Ciferno, Sarah Koucheki, Micah Simpson, Michael Braun, Austin Quinn, Amanda Thurman, Megan Splain, Annie Holy, Laura Tramer, Kyle Seaman, Taylor Pearl, Andrea Chan, Lindsey Quinn, Mike Gaudiani, Jasen Pinkerton, Brian Csumitta, Katie Marini, Lisa Choban, Jacqueline Trudeau, Casey Glassman, Brittany Rospierski, Beau Lajeunesse, Lauren Choban, and Max Gieger.  Congratulations to all who competed!

PARENTS, YOUR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION IS REQUIRED:

1. Meet Entry Procedures: Please take the time to read the Meet Entry Procedures article found on the website under the Team Information Button. If we are going to try not to abuse Marie Salibra, our meet entry VOLUNTEER, then a few requests to make her life easier:

a) Only one athlete on a swim meet entry form (SMEF). This form can be found on the Team Information page of the website in case you can't find one.

Print it out. Do not send entries in on index cards, legal paper, napkins, etc. The info on the form is needed--fill it out and use it!

b) Only one check per meet. Many parents are combining several meet entries on one check. This is a bookkeeping nightmare. Please, one check per meet.  Staple the check to the top of the SMEF.

c) Only one meet entry per envelope with the name of that meet on the front of the envelope and placed in the proper plastic entry envelope. Swimmers are going to miss meets because parents are combining entries in the same envelopes. Not all entries are due at the same time and are worked on at the same time.

Let's all do our part to make an already difficult job easier. Marie is already on borrowed time with us! Her children are in college!

2. At the meets: Parents are NOT allowed on the pool deck during meets.  Your actions have serious implications.  You are voiding the USA Swimming liability insurance.  If a parent needs to bring something to a coaches' attention, either send the swimmer to talk with the coach or write it on a note to the coach or see the coach after the meet is done!

3. Relays - Relays should be looked at as another opportunity for our swimmers to race/achieve best times, and compete as a team at swim meets. We choose the fastest swimmers on that day of competition to be on the relays and it should be viewed as a privilege if your swimmer is chosen.  Please let the coaches know at the beginning of the session if you are not able to stay for relays.  We need time to find another swimmer to take that spot and we may even ask if there is a possibility for you to stay if we have exactly enough swimmers to fill the relays that we have entered in the meet.  If you feel that your child has been inappropriately placed on a relay please have your athlete bring it to the coach's attention.  Remember:  before you leave the meet please check to see if you are on a relay!

4. Upper School Parking - For those High school, Gold, Silver and Bronze parents still parking on the oval, the parking at the Upper School is in the gravel lot.  You are making it almost impossible to get in and out of the building, let alone pick anyone up after school activities and practices.  The school has made it clear; the oval in front of the natatorium must remain open at all times for emergency vehicles.

MARK BRAUN MEET HOSPITALITY ASSIGMENTS DUE BEFORE NOVEMBER 5th

MARK BRAUN MEET WORKER’S LIST

We are hosting one of our two largest fundraisers, the Mark Braun Meet, November 19-21, at Cleveland State University. As a parent of an LESD swimmer, you have a responsibility to support the team by donating your time and working at this meet.

The following is the schedule of workers for the upcoming meet. Please note that you are required to work each session that your child competes in. Both parents of swimmers making the Saturday night finals session will be needed to work that evening.  If you do not see your name on this list, please email www.LESDwebber@hotmail.com to verify your swimmer is in the meet.

Please do not ask to be taken off of the list of workers. Find a replacement worker or hire a person 16 years or older to work your session and advise us of the change. We don’t have enough warm bodies in the 13 & over sessions as it is.

Please wear your LESD T-shirt or plain red shirts for all work sessions.

New LESI policy states that timers meeting will not begin until all of the timers have arrived. Make plans to join us on time and let the meet start as scheduled
