The Dolphin

April 2004

This newsletter is dedicated to those that have come to realize that

Swimming is a way of life.

Plain Talk

The Silver Dolphins are back in the water with a sigh of relief from the parents!  We do hope that everyone has enjoyed the break, participating in the activities you not always get the chance to do; eating as families and relaxing and enjoying yourselves.

All swimmers will begin their season the week of April 5.

It is imperative that swimmers and parents understand the importance of getting started right away.  The summer swim season is short!  All the swimmers must be in good shape by the first part of June.  If you don't start on time, full potential may not be realized this summer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Marshall family as they mourn the loss of Jon Marshall, C.J. Marshall’s younger brother.  Friends may contribute to the Jon Marshall Art Fund, Chagrin Falls High School, 400 E. Washington St., Chagrin Falls, OH  44022.

Please forward any new or changed email address to lesdwebber@aol.com for practice-change notification

A Message From Jerry

We congratulate the LESD swimmers for their fine swims throughout the indoor season.  Not only did you improve your times, but also your technique, starts and turns reflected your hard work in practice.  We are proud of each of your accomplishments and how you conducted yourself at meets and practice.  You understand that your behavior as well as excellence in the pool reflect on yourself, your team, and of course, your family.

Thank you, also, swimmers for wearing the team suit and cap at meets and for talking with your coach immediately after you swim to receive your splits and critique of the race.

We are looking forward to a fine summer season for each of you.

Billing

The team has paid fines incurred at Championships.  If you notice and extra fee charged on your statement, you were penalized by Lake Erie Swimming for not making a cut and not able to prove the time.

Please keep your coaching and relay fees paid up to date.

LESD Banquet

The Awards Program for LESD will be on Sunday, May 2, 12:00-2:00 at the Hawken Lower School’s dining room.  The Booster Club will be providing deserts and drinks.  The program will start immediately at 12:00 PM.  We will be recognizing swimmers breaking team records, Zone, Sectional, and National qualifiers, and of course, Ideal, Most Improved, and Outstanding swimmers in age groups, and members of the 100 second club.  All swimmers will receive a gift from Jerry.  We hope everyone can attend so that all the swimmers can be recognized.

We are preparing a slide show of the swimmers and the year in review.  If you have any group photos of your swimmers at meets, in practice or socializing, please send them no later than April 15th to Amanda Kiel, 1376 Meadowood Lane, Hudson, OH  44236, akiel1954@aol.com. Don't let your swim group be left out! Everyone should be represented!

Alyssa Kiel who won the women’s high point award led the team.  Alyssa won the 200, 400, 800, and 1500-meter freestyles, establishing meet records in all of the swims.  She also finished second in the 200 and 400-meter individual medleys.  Her times in both the 200 IM (2:21.98) and 400 IM (4:54.00) were new LESI swimmer records (17-18) and LESD team records (17 & over).  Ellis Schieman achieved a national time standard in route to a victory in the 200-meter butterfly (2:17.04).  Ellis also finished second in the 100 fly and the 200 free.  Rounding out the individual champions was Sarah Dorenkott who swam to victory in the 100-meter freestyle (57.96).

Dolphin relays also had great success with the women winning all three.  The 400-meter freestyle relay of Fiona O’Donnell-McCarthy, Alyssa Kiel, Ellis Schieman, and Sarah Dorenkott set a new LESI swimmer record of 3:56.12.  The 400-meter medley relay of Fiona O’Donnell-McCarthy, Michaela Hahn-Lawson, Ellis Schieman, and Sarah Dorenkott did the same with a time of 4:24.25.  In the 800-meter freestyle relay, Ellis Schieman, Sarah Dorenkott, Margot Brooks, and Alyssa Kiel combined for the win.

The success wasn’t all by our women.
