A Message from Jerry

We congratulate the LESD swimmers for their fine swims throughout the indoor season.  Not only did you improve your times, but also your technique, starts and turns reflected your hard work in practice.  We are proud of each of your accomplishments and how you conducted yourself at meets and practice. You understand that your behavior as well as excellence in the pool reflects on yourself, your team, and of course your family.

Thanks you, also, swimmers for wearing the team suit and cap at meets and for talking with your coach immediately after your swim to receive your splits and critique of the race.

We are looking forward to a fine summer season for each of you.

Thank You

The coaches want to thank Amanda Kiel, the meet director of the Speedo Championship Series Sectional meet for her leadership, time and assistance in the success of the meet.  We also would like to thank all the chairpersons, the parents, swimmers and friends who contributed to make the Sectional meet a great success.  Thank You!

Silver Dolphins Traveling to the Olympic Training Center

Coaches Rick Stacy and Ian Murray are taking a contingent of 19 Silver Dolphins to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs from March 30 through April 3. Swimmers traveling to Colorado are:  Bill Anderson, Jennifer Aronoff, Rachel Borden, Ilya Byzov, Laura Clark, Katlin Dagg, Erica Dorfman, Nicole Dumont, Erica Gliga, Louise Gliga, Annie Holy, Ryan Holy, Brittany Legal, Tim Montague, Jeff Montague, Ryan Neff, Meghan Stang, Brittany Strumbel and Courtney Tumbush.  Swimmers enjoy this fantastic training experience!

Parking at the Upper School

There are still a few parents not cooperating with this request. Parking at the Hawken Upper School continues to be a problem. Do not park in the circle in front of the building, even for a few minutes. This is a fire and emergency lane and by law must be left open at all times. We are renting pool time from Hawken and must abide by their safety rules. Local police have begun ticketing at University School for the same problem at a ticket cost of $75.00 each.  Do not be surprised if your vehicle is towed at your own expense. You were given ample warning for more than a year now.  List of vehicles continuing to park in the circle will be provided to the coaching staff.

Upcoming Travel Meets – Feedback Past Due!

LESD is considering several travel meets this spring and summer.  We do not wish to contact the host teams about a possible entry, however, unless we are certain of a positive response from our swimmers.  If you have a SERIOUS interest in attending any or all of these meets please make a copy of this part of the newsletter, indicate the meets you will attend and submit information to Rick Stacy by March 8th.  Remember that swimmers must have at least one A time in order to attend a travel meet.  If you have any questions, please call Rick Stacy at 440-951-8241

Short Course Championships

Younger Dolphin swimmers offered many impressive swims in the recently contested A Championships and drastically outscored their competitors on other local teams.  Not the least of their accomplishments was the ability of many LESD swimmers to come back following a brief break and swim even faster times in finals than in prelims, a mark of well conditioned and mentally tough swimmers.

On the female side the ten and under girls produced an impressive total of twelve Dolphins scoring in individual events: Carrie Bencic, Emily Gudbranson, Sara Koucheki, Emily Gaudiani, Kelsey Pinkerton, Meggie Pernsteiner, Lizzie Aronoff, Emma Smith, Caroline Vexler, Taylor Forsythe, Elinor vanHeeckeren, and Haley Schubert.  Two of these won individual events, Aronoff in the 50 breast (37.78) and Gaudiani in the 200 (2:15.37) and 500 (5:56.55), while Pinkerton, Aronoff, Gaudiani and Bencic won the 200 MR (2:17.29).  In addition Gaudiani, one of a handful of swimmers in the meet to score in every stroke, was runner-up for the high point award.  The 11-12 girls were even more impressive, placing thirteen girls in finals:  Alana Arnold, Megan Splain, Amanda Thurman, Erica Gliga, Maryn Bieganski, Taylor Pearl, Annie Holy, Lauren Choban, Jackie Gleske, Alex Giordano, Laura Tramer, Lindsey Quinn, and Logan Arnold.  Three produced individual victories: Megan Splain in the 100 breast (1:13.02), Maryn Bieganski in the 100 fly (1:03.41) and Alana Arnold in the 50 free (25.93), 200 breast (2:33.58), 50 fly (27.95), 100 IM (1:04.33) and 200 IM (2:18.62).  In addition, Bieganski, Thurman, Splain and Arnold won the 200 (1:45.86) and 400 (3:54.07) free relays and Giordano, Splain, Arnold and Bieganski won the 200 (1:56.98/meet, swimmer and event record) and 400 (4:18.66) medley relays.

On the male side the 11-12 boys were led by finalists Zach Melvin, Mike Gaudiani, Jasen Pinkerton, Brian Csumitta, David Aronoff, Andrew Malone, and Junior Samonte.  Two Dolphins won individual events, Melvin in the 100 IM (1:04.33) and Gaudiani in the 200 fly (2:19.96), while Gaudiani, Alec Janda, Malone, and Melvin won the 200 free relay (1:49.63), Gaudiani, Malone, Aronoff, and Melvin won the 400 free relay (4:06.35), Melvin, Aronoff, Gaudiani and Malone won the 200 medley relay (2:04.95), and Melvin, Aronoff, Gaudiani, and Janda won the 400 medley relay (4:39.54).  The ten and under boys produced six finalists: Micah Simpson, James Martin, Austin Quinn, KJ Stang, Marcus Contipelli, and Nikolai Levinsohn.  Stang, Contipelli, Quinn and Simpson won the 200 free relay (2:03.95) and 200 medley relay (2:21.88), while Simpson won the 50 free (28.13), 50 breast (36.63) and 100 breast (1:23.83) and Stang won all of his events: 100 free (1:03.52), 200 free (2:11.19), 500 (5:33.82/meet record), 50 back (31.61), 100 back (1:05.06/meet, swimmer and event record [and identical to Dolphin Shelley Klaus's 10 and under 100 back record]), 100 fly (1:08.43), 100 IM (1:09.55) and 200 IM (2:23.74).  Not surprisingly, KJ also won the high point award in his age group.

The 13-14 girls dominated competition throughout the meet.  Brittany Strumbel and Louise Gliga were the High Point winner and Runner-Up, respectively.   Strumbel picked up wins in the 50 free (24.75), 100 free (53.07), 200 free (1:55.12), 100 back (1:00.65), and 200 IM (2:10.47).  Gliga touched first in the 100 fly (59.94), 200 fly (2:09.52), and 400 IM (4:40.92).  Also taking home victories was Bettina Hahn-Lawson, who swam to first in the 500 free (5:14.28) and 1000 free (10:47.13).  Rounding out the first place finishes for the 13-14 girls were the absolutely dominating relays.  The Dolphins won all four relay events, including finishing first and second in the 400 medley relay.  The 200 medley relay of Katlin Dagg, Jennifer Aronoff, Gliga, and Strumbel set the meet and LESI swimmer record with a 1:52.95.  Other Dolphins finishing in the top 10 were Emily Splain, Courtney Tumbush, Katlin Dagg, Stacey Miozzi, Jordan Hawn, Meghan Stang, Maria Chan, Casey Glassman, Maddy Strohl, Katie Marini, and Brittany Rospierski. The 13-14 boys were highlighted by Jimmy Ranallo and Chad Kusa. Ranallo picked up top ten finishes in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, and 100 fly.  Kusa did the same in the 100 free and 100 back.

The senior girls also dominated competition the entire weekend.  Fiona O’Donnell McCarthy won the women’s high point.  She picked up wins in the 50 free (23.95), 100 free (52.33), 200 free (1:52.91), 500 free (5:04.19), and 200 back (2:06.26).  Also picking up wins was Alyssa Kiel in the 200 breast (2:24.28) and 200 fly (2:06.44).  Laura Clark touched first in the 400 IM (4:36.34) and the 1000 free (10:32.60).  Brittany Legal rounded out the individual wins with the 1650 (17:42.72).  The women also swept the relays, winning all three contested.  Other swimmers finishing in the top 10 were Jennifer Aronoff, Lauren Schaefer, Erica Dorfman, Jacqueline Trudeau, Emily Mekesa, Stephanie Bagi, Sarah Dorenkott, and Michaela Dumm.  On the men’s side, Jay AuWerter picked up a win the in 100 free (48.56), while Ryan Neff took home the 1650 (16:35.63), Ari Markle took the 100 fly (52.12) and Pete Pelser the 100 back (53.05).
