The Dolphin

May, 2004

This newsletter is dedicated to those that have come to realize that swimming is a way of life.

Plain Talk

We want to extend a warm welcome to all the new swimmers and their families to the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins.  The coaches will do everything in their power to help each and every swimmer reach their full potential.  We also want every swimmer to have fun and enjoy all the opportunities that swimming provides.  If you have any questions, please see your coach or see our web site at www.lesd.org.

21 swimmers will represent LESD at the Carmel Spring Fling in Indiana on May 14-16.  Our National Team swimmers will attend the Santa Clara Grand Prix Meet on May 21-23.  Some Dolphins will attend the Canton Distance Meet on June 5.  The Canton Age Group and Open Meet is slated for June 12-13.  The entries for these meets have been sent.  The North Baltimore meet is a time-standard meet on June 11-14.  40+ swimmers will be representing the Dolphins at this meet. Solon Meet entries are due Friday May 7.  The meet is slated for the weekend of June 18-20.  This brings us to our meet on June 25-27.  The due date for entries to our meet is Wednesday, May 12.

Meet information sheets, including name of meet, date, location, events, time standards (if any), and due date; can be found on our website, www.lesd.org .  When interested in signing up for a meet, take a Swim Meet Entry Form (also available on the website), complete the form, and then return it to your coach with a check payable to LESD in the appropriate amount.

Remember to wear your LESD suit, cap and other Dolphin gear at meets.  This sets us apart from others, helps the coaching staff find you on the blocks, see you swim in events, and of course, shows you are proud to be a member of LESD.  We are a Speedo sponsored team.  We will send out information through coaches as to how you can order your Dolphin apparel through the team. See the Uniform button on the website for May order forms.

The summer meet schedule is posted to our website.  You will notice that LESD is hosting one big meet.  We are asking families to sponsor at least one (1) event / meet.  This is a $15 donation / event.  The sponsorship forms are enclosed.  Claudia Bacon is the sponsorship coordinator.  Please return your sponsor checks, payable to Silver Dolphin Booster Club, to your coach.  Also, families wanting to purchase an ad for the heat sheet can do so by completing the enclosed form and addressing it to Claudia Bacon.

Please get your meet entry sheets for the Braun Meet into your coach by May 12.

Please send your email address to lesdwebber@hotmail.com and become part of LESD online mailings.

Keep up to date by visiting www.lesd.org for our latest news.

Coach's Comment

The purpose of the lay-off period was to give swimmers the opportunity to refresh the mind and body, spend time with family and friends, get focused with studies, eat at least one dinner with the rest of their family, and prepare for the coming season.   Some individuals felt as if they didn't need this time.  And maybe they didn't.  Others feel that they need more time.  This next paragraph is for you.

It is important to start practices on time.  There are consequences for delaying your return.  First, obviously, is a loss of conditioning.  This includes loss of endurance, speed, feel for the water, technique, and intensity.  The second reason is an increased chance for injury.  When you stay out, and then return to try and keep up with swimmers who have been swimming, your body is going to be stressed.  The training atmosphere will become intense and lose its enjoyment.  Reason three is mental difficulty.  You may return only to be beaten by swimmers you had little trouble beating during the past season.  Fourth, lastly, and perhaps the most important, when you don't start on time, there is never enough time to get into absolute top condition.  The period of time needed is 14, 16, sometimes 18 weeks of intense regular training in order to reach the level of outstanding condition.  If you hope to reach the level of physical excellence that will produce peak performance at the required meet, there is no short cut.  So swimmers, if you haven't yet started and you expect to do well this summer, the obvious advice is: You must start practicing NOW!

High School swimmers, it is essential that you train hard and regularly throughout the summer season in order to fully develop in the winter season.  There is no doubt in our minds that a great performance in February is directly related to spring and summer training.

Busbey Meet

The Busbey Meet is coming June 25-27 to Cleveland State University. Entries are due to your coach by May 12th. We are the hosts for this meet, which holds competitions for ages 8 through the Open age groups. This meet runs 3 full days with the 12 & under swimmers competing in the morning and the 13 & over competitions in the afternoon. EVERY parent of every LESD swimmer entered in the meet is expected to work each session that his or her children competes. Please make your work / baby-sitting arrangements now so you will be able to work your assignments. If you are unable to come yourself, please provide Amanda Kiel with the name and phone number of the person who will be working in your place. This is the first of the two major swim meets that we host this year and is a major fundraiser for us. Work assignments will be posted on the website as well as sent in the June newsletter.

To help with the Hospitality expenses, we are asking that each LESD family contribute one 12 pack of pop. This will help us save more than $300.00 that we usually spend on purchasing the drinks ourselves. The pop can be brought in, no later than June 1st, and given to your group representative.

Amanda Kiel and Margie Moragne: Gold / CSU - Regular Coke

Pat Tumbush and Nancy Choban: Silver - Diet Coke

Beth Forsythe: Bronze - Diet Pepsi

Josie Cerer: Blue - Sprite or 7-Up

LESD Dover Lake Picnic

On Wednesday, July 14th, LESD is hosting a team picnic at the Dover Lake Water Park.  LESD will provide the burgers and hot dogs and each family will be asked to share a side dish for 10. More details will be included in the June newsletter. Save this date for a day of fun!

Donations Needed

The Booster Board is looking for two donations that will help the club run more efficiently. For the storage of our current club information and also for our archives, we are looking for a file cabinet. The second item that we could use is a laptop computer. We are hoping that one of you know of a business

Contact who may have in their inventory a laptop computer that they no longer use.  These are much easier to transport to meets instead of a large desktop.  We would also use this computer to hold the team website, which is growing constantly.

If you have any information or suggestions on either of these items, please contact Amanda Kiel, 330-656-1285.

Sectional Meet, March 17-20, 2005.

Please mark your calendars for March 17-20, 2005. We have been awarded the USA Sectional Meet for the central zone. As some of you may remember, we hosted this meet March 2002 and it was a huge success.  Since the CSU pool will be closed the summer of 2005, this meet will be our fundraiser instead of the Summer Busbey Meet.  All LESD families will be needed to work sessions for this meet. More details later.

USA Swimming, ID Cards

Your USA Swimming, ID cards are being passed out to you. You will be required to produce these when deck entering meets. Please laminate them and keep them in a safe place.  You have the only copy.

 Busbey Meet Ads

Ads for the Busbey Meet are due no later than June 1st to Claudia Bacon. Email Claudia at ohiobacons@worldnet.com for more info.
