THE DOLPHIN
This newsletter is dedicated to those that have come to
realize that swimming is a way of life.
We want to extend a warm welcome to
all the new swimmers and their families to the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins. The coaches will do everything in their power
to help each and every swimmer reach their full potential. We also want every swimmer to have fun and
enjoy all the opportunities that swimming provides. If you have any questions, please talk to your
coach or see our web site at www.Lesd.org.
Remember to wear your LESD suit, cap
and other dolphin gear at meets. This
sets us apart from others, helps the coaching staff find you on the blocks, see
you swim in events, and of course, shows you are proud to be a member of LESD.
Coaches Comments
The purpose of the lay-off period
was to give swimmers the opportunity to refresh the mind and body, spent time
with family and friends, get focused with studies, eat at least one dinner with
the rest of their family, and prepare for the coming season. Some individuals felt as if they didn’t need
this time. And maybe they didn’t. Others
feel that they need more time. This next
paragraph is for you.
It is important to start practices on
time. There are consequences for
delaying your return. First, obviously,
is a loss of conditioning. This includes
loss of endurance, speed, the feel for the water, technique, and intensity. The second is an increase chance for injury. When you stay out, and then return to try and
keep up with swimmers who have been swimming, your body is going to be
stressed. The training atmosphere will
become intense and lose its enjoyment.
Reason three is mental difficulty.
You may return only to be beaten by swimmers you had little trouble
beating during the past season. Fourth,
lastly, and perhaps the most important, when you don’t start on time, there is
never enough time to get into absolute top condition. The period of time needed is 14, 16 and
sometimes 18 weeks of intense regular training in order to reach the level of
outstanding condition. If you hope to
reach the level of physical excellence that will produce peak performance at
the required meet, there is no short cut.
So swimmers, if you haven’t yet started and you expect to do well this
summer, the obvious advice is: You must start practicing NOW!
High school swimmers, it is
essential that you train hard and regularly throughout the summer season in
order to develop in the winter season.

Parents of swimmers
who went to the Olympic Training Center
This is to remind the parents who
had swimmers attend the altitude camp that each swimmer was charged a
processing fee. If you have not paid
this charge yet it will be included in your monthly bill.
Meet Fees
Many parents use e-mail to submit
entries to Marie Salibra. The check must
follow the next day in order to process your entry. We have entry fees outstanding from February
and March. Those fees will be included
in the May bill.
Swimmers attending
International meets
Alyssa Kiel will be going to the
World University Games August 11-17 in Izmir, Turkey. She will be swimming the 400, 800, and 1500

Meet Results Wrap -Ups
Barbara K Mini Meet
A trophy
meet for 8 & Unders -- was held March 5 and 6 in Worthington and was
attended by 28 LESD swimmers. Although we were only the fourth largest team in
a field of twenty-one (and Upper Arlington had a HUGE group of 57 swimmers
present!), the Dolphins powered their way to another first place showing! It
was a nail-biter though: LESD 1590 points to UASC's 1490.5 points, then
Worthington with 979.
Winning
High Point or Runner-Up Awards in their respective age groups were Jubilee
Winar (Runner Up for 8 year old Girls), Henry Senkfor (Runner Up for 8 year old
Boys) and Joey Cerer (High Point for 8 year old Boys). Joey Cerer took first
place honors in the 200 IM, 25 Breast, 25 Fly, 100 Free, 50 Fly, and 50 Breast
in the 8 year old boys.
Also
placing in the top six in individual events and thus winning trophies were
Nathan Zinda, Henry Senkfor, Luke George, Gabriela Cerer, Jubilee Winar, Andrew
Jones, Ryan Gleske, Nils Gudbranson, Jeff Jones, and Susie Wager. Additionally,
finishing in the top 12 and earning points for the team were Mara Ursu, Abby
Forsythe, Alex Stotter, Sydney Torok, Robert Ranallo, Zachary Zinda, Clair
O'Brien, Skylar Schambs, Jon Vexler, and Brian Schlang. Thanks all you
swimmers; you earned that team trophy!
In Relays
LESD's 7&U Girls took first in both the Free and Medley relays; the
8&Under Boys took first in the Free and Medley relays also!
A note of
thanks to all the parents in attendance who helped with making sure swimmers
made all their events! Special kudos to Beth Forsythe, Dana Trau, and Josie
Cerer for dinner arrangements at the hotel.
A message from
Coach Ian to the Silver Swimmers
Here is an
update on a few things I contacted you about earlier this month.
1. It now
appears that we will be staying at Cleveland State through Saturday, June
11. Workouts will remain 5:00 - 7:00 PM on weekdays and 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM
on Saturdays. Their construction schedule has been pushed back and we
will try to make full use of it.
2. Since
we will be staying longer at Cleveland State, parents may want to consider
purchasing a parking pass for those weeks. It is only $6 a week for the
pass (much better than the $3/day). You can purchase the passes in the
Chester building at the northwest corner of the PE building.
3. Our
summer schedule is now set as well. We are unable to use the Garfield
Heights pool after the Gold swimmers in the mornings. Instead, we
will be swimming at Hawken Upper School Monday - Saturday. The
workout time will be 8:15 - 10:15 AM (Saturdays TBA later) and will
include the normal breakdown of dryland and swimming. I understand that
this will be difficult for some families. Do your best and hopefully this
gives you time to organize carpooling.
4. Please
note that short course swimming will not hurt the swimmers in the summer.
I plan to take full advantage of the long course swimming till then and build a
nice base. However, short course training for long course swimming is not
a bad thing.
5. I
will be sending out another email tonight regarding my Saturday lessons.
I will run it similar to this past Saturday... with the possibility of some
time adjustments.
6.
Finally, I will be out of town from April 30 - May 8. All Silver workouts
will be covered by Rick Stacy at the Upper School while I am gone.
Families with transportation issues can still come to CSU, where Jerry and
Janice will be able to take care of all needs.
