Coach’s Comments

The coaches are very pleased with the progress the swimmers are making in practice.  This is directly related to the fast swims at meets.  Your technique in strokes is better.  Starts, with more concentration will improve in time.  Hey, even streamlines are improving.  Preparation is the key to improved times.  Keep it up!

Swim Meets

Swim meets are the best way of evaluating swimmers.  Meets provide the means for coaches to observe the technique of the swimmers in all four strokes, to observe the skill level of the swimmers starts and turns and if they have good reaction time and quickness, whether they understand race strategy and of course if they improve their times.  Swim meets also answer the questions of how hard do you (swimmers) work in practice, how regular are you in going to practice, and are you a competitor.                                                                                                        Swimming more than any other sport supports the theory that success is directly related to the effort in practice.  Some swimmers may say that they work hard in practice, they do not miss practice, and yet they still do not swim as fast as they should, why?  The answer may be assuming of course the swimmer is meeting all the above criteria – Do you understand how to swim your race? Did you get your rest? Are you free of sickness or injury and did you get a good warm-up?  All of these are factors in determining how fast you will swim.  But there are two other factors which we consider crucial in determining how well you will do in a swim meet.  You must be excited and enthusiastic in wanting to go to the meet and swim every event you are entered in.  The second factor is - are you a fighter in the races or do you let up when the pain hits your body.  Champions are those swimmers that will not be beaten they will use every ounce of energy in their body and fight through the end of the race even when their body is hurting.  Swimmers step up your intensity at meets, be excited in swimming your races, and swim to your abilities.

The Nashville Summer Sizzler

The NAC Summer Sizzler provided an excellent early season test for Dolphin swimmers.  Drawing over 900 swimmers from 13 States, this was one of the largest age group meets in the country.  Despite minimal numbers (35 swimmers) LESD finished 5th (and 3rd in the women's division), an excellent performance.

Despite swimming "tired" older swimmers raced well against national level competition and Louise Gliga, Courtney Tumbush, Laura Clark, Beth Bacon and Ryan Holy all earned second swims in finals where they performed well.

Younger swimmers provided the bulk of the traveling team, and they provided outstanding performances.  Alana ("Pete") Arnold, Dana Shaker, Annie Holy, Lindsey Quinn, Mike Gaudiani, Micah Simpson, Sarah Koucheki, Emily Gaudiani, Caroline Vexler, Kaitlin Cerne, Meggie Pernsteiner, and Taylor Forsythe all scored in the top 8, with Mike winning the 400 free (4:47.63), Micah the 50 fly (36.38) and 200 IM (2:51.94), Alana the 50 free (29.98), 50 fly (31.34/meet record), 100 fly (1:1014/meet record), and 100 free (1:03.65), and Emily the 50 breast (44.27), 100 fly (1:20.37), 50 back (39.06) 100 breast (1:32.94) and 200 IM (2:47.03/meet record).  Additionally, Maryn Bieganski, Dana Shaker, Taylor, and Kaitlin all made their first Zone cuts of the season while the 11-12 girls went 1-2 in the 50 free and the 10 and under girls went 1-2 in the 50 fly, 50 back, and 200 IM and 1-2-3 in the 100 breast and 100 fly.  Very good job swimmers!
