Meet Wrap-Ups
District Championships
LESD produced a remarkable TEAM performance at the
District 14 and Under Championships held in Canton. LESD won the team title with 5211 points, far
put pacing runner-up USC with 1906 points and exceeding the total of the next
four teams combined. By gender, the boys
won their side of the meet with 2015 points and the girls won their side with
3196 points.
Many,
many swimmers contributed to this impressive performance. In the 8 and under age group, Jubilee Winar,
Julie Bogomolny, Abigail Forysthe and Susan Wager all placed in the top eight,
with Jubilee winning all of her events: 50 free (39.17), 100 free (1:28.70), 50
back (45.40), 50 breast (5251), and 50 fly (49.94). Although the 8 and under boys produced no individual
winners, they had many fine swims with Charles Splain, Ryan Gleske and Adam
Bozsval all scoring.
Nine
10 and under girls placed in the meet: Carrie Bencic, Emily Gaudiani, Emily
Gudbranson, Sarah Koucheki, Kaitlin Cerne, Haley Schubert, Taylor Forsythe,
Nelly Bornhorst and Caroline Vexler.
Emily Gaudiani produced five individual first places: 200 free (2:32.58),
400 free (5:18.07), 100 breast (1:31.50), 100 fly (1:22.25), 200 IM
(2:47.69). In addition, Gudbranson,
Vexler, Gaudiani and Bencic won the 400 free relay (4:58.07--one second off the
district record) and Koucheki, Gaudiani, Forsythe, and Bencic won the 400
medley relay. And for added excitement,
Kaitlin Cerne time trialed and made her zone cut in the 100 fly (1:26.43) while
Haley Schubert made her first cut in the 100 breast (1:34.99), the latter an
event in which Dolphin girls held six of the top eight places.
For
the 10 and under boys, Micah Simpson, Liam Oznowich, Michael Ruddock, Austin
Quinn, Nikolai Levinsohn, Marcus Contipelli and Henry Senkfor all placed in the
top eight, with Micah winning eight events: 50 free (32.08), 100 free, (1:11.30),
200 free (2:36.48), 400 free (5:27.75), 50 breast (44.19), 100 breast
(1:36.99), 100 fly (1:24.99) and 200 IM (2:55.78).
The
11-12 girls produced an extremely strong effort, with thirteen swimmers scoring
in the top eight: Amanda Thurman, Megan Splain, Dana Shaker, Lauren Choban,
Annie Holy, Laura Tramer, Logan Arnold, Brooke Bieganski, Taylor Pearl, Andrea
Chan, Meggie Pernsteiner, Sam Santoscoy, and Carmella Boggess. Perhaps even more amazing, five of them won
individual events: Splain in the 50 fly (33.07), 400 IM (5:34.19), 200 free
(2:20.63) and 400 free (4:56.43); Shaker in the 100 free (1:04.85--her 13-14
Zone cut) and 200 IM (2:44.81); Holy in the 100 fly (1:12.30) and 200 fly
(2:36.51); Choban in the 200 back (2:38.81); and Tramer in the 200 breast
(2:59.85). In addition, Choban, Splain,
Holy and Shaker won the 400 medley relay (5:08.30) while Carolyn Vekstein added
real excitement to the meet, time trialing and making her first Zone cut in the
50 free (30.53).
The 11-12 boys also produced a strong effort,
with Mike Gaudiani, Nicholas Crane, KJ Stang, Jasen Pinkerton, Ted Bornhorst,
Nick Ranallo, Brian Csumitta and Sam Ruddock all placing in the top eight. Individually Mike won the 400 free (4:47.61),
100 fly (1:10.97), 200 fly (2:30.81) and 400 IM (5:19.03), while Nicholas won
the 50 fly (32.98), 100 back (1:15.27) and 200 back (2:35.33). Crane, Csumitta, Stang and Gaudiani combined
to win the 400 free relay (4:53.76) and Stang, Crane, Gaudiani and Pinkerton
combined to win the 400 medley relay (5:23.20).
In
the 13-14 age group, Alana Arnold, Meghan Stang, Maryn Bieganski, Kaitlin Dagg,
Erica Gliga, Emily Splain, Brittany Rospierski, Maddy Strohl, Jordan Hawn,
Lindsey Quinn, and Casey Glassman all scored in the top eight, led by Stang
with a win in the 400 free (4:49.71), Dagg with wins in the 100 back (1:12.27),
200 back (2:36.19), 100 fly (1:09.79) an 200 fly (2:30.48), and Splain, Arnold,
Dagg and Strohl who combined to win the 800 free relay (9:35.28).
Not
surprisingly, LESD had many high point winners:
Winar for the 8 and under girls; Gaudiani for the 10 and under girls
(Bencic 2nd); Simpson for the 10 and under boys (Levinsohn, Ruddock and
Contipelli all in the top eight); Megan Splain for the 11-12 girls (Holy, Shaker,
Tramer, Arnold and Choban in the top eight!); and Gaudiani for the 11-12 boys
(Crane 2nd).
Truly
an excellent meet and one the entire team can be proud of.
Zone Meet
A large group of LESD swimmers qualified for
and competed in the Central Zone Meet in Ann Arbor, MI [that inferior school up
north!] in mid-August. In an elite meet
that draws many of the best age group swimmers from across the Midwest, Meghan
Stang, Brittany Rospierski, Maryn Bieganski, Alana Arnold, Bettina Hahn-Lawson,
Claire Pavlak, Jen Aronoff, Emily Gaudiani, Caroline Vexler, Carrie Bencic,
Annie Holy, Megan Splain, Amanda Thurman, Micah Simpson, Mike Gaudiani, Chris
Nemeth, Ryan Neff, and Tim Montague all scored for Lake Erie. In addition Aronoff won the 100 breast
(1:17.43) and Emily Gaudiani won the 200 IM (2:44.67--the 7th fastest time
nationally for her age group). A very
good job in challenging circumstances!
Speedo
Champions Series
For the 4th straight summer Bloomington,
Indiana was the site of the Speedo Champions Series – Central Zone Section 3
Championships. The Dolphins had 21
athletes compete over the five day event.
Leading the way for the women’s side was Brittany Strumbel who finished
3rd in the 200 free and 5th in the 200 IM. She also achieved her first Junior National
time standard in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.25. Laura Clark finished 4th in the
400 IM, while Sarah Dorenkott did the same in the 100 free. Brittany Legal had the women’s top finish
with a 2nd place showing in the 800 free.
Jeff Montague turned the best performance on the
men’s side for the Dolphins. Jeff had
our best finish with a 3rd place effort in the 400 IM. His time of 4:39.77 was his first qualifying
standards for Junior Nationals. Ryan
Holy was our only other men’s top 8 finish with an 8th place showing
in the 400 IM.
Other Dolphins turning in excellent individual
swims and relay performances were; Bill Anderson, Jennifer Aronoff, Beth Bacon,
Katlin Dagg, Erica Dorfman, Nicole Dumont, Hallie English, Norm Ference, Louise
Gliga, Christine Misterka, Tim Montague, Ryan Neff, Claire Pavlak, Ryan Pearl,
and Courtney Tumbush. Well done!
USA Swimming
Junior Nationals
The Lake Erie Silver Dolphins had a very good
showing at USA Swimming’s first Junior Nationals since 2000 in Irvine,
California. With the new time standards,
the meet proved to be very competitive.
Three Dolphins qualified in individual events. Jeff Montague competed in the 400 freestyle
and the 400 individual medley. He was
joined by Brittany Legal, swimming the 400, 800, and 1500 freestyles. Finally, Brittany Strumbel highlighted the
team’s performance with a 6th place finish in the 200
freestyle. Well done swimmers!
Senior
Nationals
The Senior Nationals produced some
fine swims with the 800 free relay placing 7th with a time of
8:21.61 and the 400 free relay placing 9th with a time of 3:53.08, a
new district record. Ellis Schieman
placed 14th in the 200 fly – 2:15.34, 17th 400 free –
4:16.89, 400 free relay lead-off – 58.54, 800 free relay lead-off –
2:04.42. Diana Munz placed 5th
800 free – 8:36.48, 6th 400 free – 4:15.22, 12th 200 free
– 2:02.41. A very fine meet for Ellis
Schieman, Diana Munz, Lauren Preyss and Fiona O’Donnell-McCarthy.
